По мотивам поэм классика грузинской литературы Важи Пшавелы «Алуда Кетелаури» и «Гость и хозяин» Этой лентой Тенгиз Абуладзе открыл трилогию («Мольба», «Древо желания», «Покаяние»), где на исконном национальном материале был начат разговор об общечеловеческих ценностях. Гибель героев, рыцарей истины и добра, приводит Поэта к мысли о непобедимости зла. Устав от борьбы и лишений, Поэт складывает оружие. И тогда к нему приходят все его любимые герои. Они гасят свечи в чаше с пивом – ритуальный хевсурский жест, означающий отречение. И только увидев, какие несчастья и беды несет за собой отказ от борьбы со злом, Поэт вновь берет в руки оружие.
Based on the poems “Aluda Ketelauri” and “The Guest and the Host” by the classic of Georgian literature Vazha Pshavela This film opens Tengiz Abuladze’s trilogy (“The Plea”, “The Wishing Tree”, “Repentance”), which discusses the subject of common human values using original national material. The death of heroes, the knights of truth and good, leads the Poet to the conclusion that the evil is invincible. Exhausted by struggle and privations, the Poet lays down his arms. He is visited then by all of his favorite heroes. They put out candles by dipping them into a beer cup – a ritual Khevsuri gesture meaning renunciation. And only after seeing what misfortune and harm the rejection of fighting the evil results in, the Poet takes up arms again.

Gibel geroev, rytsarej istiny i dobra, privodit Poeta k mysli o nepobedimosti zla. Ustav ot borby i lishenij, Poet skladyvaet oruzhie. I togda k nemu prikhodjat vse ego ljubimye geroi. Oni gasjat svechi v chashe s pivom – ritualnyj khevsurskij zhest, oznachajuschij otrechenie. I tolko uvidev, kakie neschastja i bedy neset za soboj otkaz ot borby so zlom, Poet vnov beret v ruki oruzhie.
