Émouvant mélodrame construit autour des destins de trois femmes. Trois amies: Antonina, Ludmila et Ekatérina, débarquent de la province avec la ferme volonté de trouver à Moscou le parti de leur rêve. Elles logent dans une chambre de foyer ouvrier, travaillent dans la même usine, passent ensemble leurs loisirs. Antonina est la première à se marier, elle épouse un homme de bien et connaît le bonheur au sein de sa famille. Pour Ludmila, Moscou serait comme une loterie où il s’agit de tirer le bon billet et ne pas bâiller aux corneilles. Elle tente de conquérir l’énorme métropole, mais le morceau est trop gros, elle est perdante. Reste Ekatérina, la dernière du trio d’amies, et son histoire est celle d’une Cendrillon moderne: une femme qui connaît bien des désillusions, mais ne désespère jamais et en vingt ans de carrière, accède au poste de directeur d’une importante usine. Ekatérina s’occupe aussi de sa grande fille et un jour, le bonheur finit par lui sourire: аprès des années d’amertume et de solitude, elle rencontre l’homme de sa vie...
