Elokuvan päähenkilö on georgialainen Valiko Mizandari, lempinimeltään Mimino (haukka georgian kielellä). Hän lentää helikopteria kuljettaen ruokaa ja eläimiä. Hän haluaa kuitenkin pois pikkukylästä, lentämään isoilla koneilla. Hän lähtee Moskovaan, jossa kohtaa niin mukavia ihmisiä kuin siskonsa entisen heilankin. Mutta suuri maailmakaan ei ole onnen tae. Ses amis ont surnommé Valiko Mizandari « Mimimo », ce qui veut dire faucon. Le jeune homme est pilote d’hélicoptère, son travail consiste à livrer la poste, les fruits, les moutons dans les hautes vallées de la montagne. Mais il rêve de bien autre chose, d’être pilote de ligne. Bientôt la chance lui sourit, il est engagé par la grande compagnie internationale « Aéroflot » et va se fixer à Moscou. Ici Mimino va faire connaissance avec toute sorte de gens et notamment avec le chauffeur de camion Khatchiyan, qui devient son ami. Mais il rencontre également un personnage moins sympathique, avec lequel sa sœur avait eu maille à partir autrefois. Mimino est un garçon ouvert et bienveillant, l’atmosphère de la grande ville finit par lui peser. A présent, il pilote un jet supersonique, sillonne les grandes routes aériennes du monde, mais l’appel du pays est le plus fort, il regagne sa Géorgie natale, sa famille, ses proches et ses amis de toujours.
