The Other Helsinki - The Reverse Face of Architecture in the City / Photographs by Juha Ilonen * Venetsian biennaali * 2000
The interior parts of Helsinki's perimeter blocks are an unknown yet integral part of the history of the city. The architecture of the back yards has emerged slowly, layer by layer, without any explicit aesthetic aims. Instead, one finds crude disorder, fostered by neglect, boldness, greed, inequality, mindless bureaucracy, and a host of random factors. The unintentional architecture of the reverse face is at best far more vibrant and forceful than what the street fronts have to offer. Previously disregarded massive fire-break walls are now valued as examples of the work of past bricklayers.

The Other Helsinki presents the architecture of back yards with large photographs and provides background information on the history of perimeter blocks in Helsinki. The third edition contains added text and fifteen previously unpublished photographs.
