Ce film compte parmi les plus prisés et les plus aimés du public russe. Les destinées de deux amis, Alexei Trofimov et Ivan Varavva, sont suivies au fil de nombreuses années. Dans les années 1920, les deux jeunes gens font leur service à un poste-frontière et combattent les nationalistes d’Asie centrale. Ils retiendront pour toute leur vie les paroles de leur commandant: « Défendre la patrie, c’est une profession ». Ils participent ensuite à la guerre civile en Espagne et à la Seconde guerre mondiale et se revoient de nouveau en temps de paix, alors qu’ils sont tous deux généraux
One of the most popular and favourite films in Russia. The film follows at length the lives of two friends – Alexei Trofimov and Ivan Varrava. In the 1920s they served together at a frontier outpost, fighting with the basmachs. It was there that the young men first heard, and remembered for the rest of their lives, their commander’s behest: “There is such a profession – defending one’s Motherland”. Then followed Spain, the Great Patriotic War, and peaceful time. The old friends reunite when they are already in the rank of generals.
