Смерть окружала их со всех сторон: спереди их косили пулеметы противника, сзади - пулеметы заградотрядов НКВД. Фильм рассказывает о трагических судьбах штрафников, жизнями которых добивались победы в самый тяжелый период Великой Отечественной войны...
Doesn't matter if you where a private or an officer in the Soviet army of 1941, if you got captured, wounded or not by the Axis powers, escaped from them to rejoin the Soviet Army, you became a subject of the NKVD (Soviet military police and intelligence service, after Stalin: KGB). Few got away without beatings. some where executed and if you where "lucky" you could join a Shtrafbat (Penalty unit). In this unit you would be thrown together with criminals, and other not so desirable members of the human society. When attacking, your unit would be the first going over the parapet, when defending, you are in the eye of the enemy attack. This series does not hold anything back, the acting is fantastic and believable.Some of the best Russian actors can be seen. It's like you feel their cold, discomfort, exhaustion, painful injuries disillusionment, and perhaps just a very tiny glimmer of hope to survive. Sometimes the frontline calmes down a little bit, but nevertheless no time for you to relax, fellow soldiers criminal mind, might kill you for a rotten stinky potato. It does however not always turn out that way, and after a while the survivors realize that they can only survive another day, if they create a bond. This bond will become stronger, the more we get into the movie. Some "former civilized" soldiers will become animals, some "former hardened criminals" turning into saints. Only very few of those have survived this stage, when the order comes to cross the River Don in 1943 to create a bridgehead. Little do they know, that they are just a distraction for German defenders, who will throw anything against them, believing they are the main Soviet thrust...
This series could be compared to "Band of Brothers", as the grittier version. It comes with many CGI effects, and decent battle scenes. There are stories within the story, portraying a number of our protagonist's, with their past. Reminded me a bit of Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the dead".

Rangaistuspataljoona on venäläinen televisiosarja vuodelta 2004. Se kertoo vangeista muodostetusta pataljoonasta itärintamalla toisessa maailmansodassa. 11-osaisen sarjan on ohjannut Nikolai Dostal.
Rangaistuspataljoonia perustettiin vuonna 1942 Stalinin käskyllä numero 227 rangaistukseksi sotilaille, jotka pakenivat etenevää natsi-Saksan armeijaa. Käsky 227 mahdollisti myös gulag-pakkotyöleireillä olevien vankien lähettämisen rintamalle.
Suuri isänmaallinen sota on viimeinen Neuvostoliitosta jäljelle jäänyt myytti, joka edelleen yhdistää venäläisiä. Rangaistuspataljoona-sarjassa on monia uskonnollisia viittauksia, koska monet nykyvenäläiset, mukaan lukien ohjaaja Dostal ja käsikirjoittaja Volodarskii, uskovat, että venäläiset itse asiassa taistelivat ja kärsivät Venäjän ortodoksisen yhteisön puolesta.
