Странного вида утенок вылупляется из необычного яйца на птичьем дворе. Непохожий на других утят. Все домашние птицы находят его уродливым. В нашем фильме это будет пластилиновый утенок, в то время, как другие домашние птицы: гуси, утки, индейки будут в перьях.
В фильме звучит музыка Петра Ильича Чайковского из балетов «Лебединое озеро» и «Щелкунчик», аранжированная композитором Сергеем Михайловичем Анашкиным. Некоторые фрагменты аранжированы под песни на стихи Юлия Кима. Примечательным является факт переделки вальсов в марш (см. Торжественный марш), а также необычной аранжировки сцены из балета «Лебединое озеро» в песню «Гадкий, утенок гадкий…».
Adapted from the Andersen tale and played out in musical comedy mode, The Ugly Duckling is set in a farmyard where roosters, hens, ducks and geese live and lay eggs together. One fine day, a rooster discovers a giant egg behind the farmyard kingdom fence, and discreetly slips it into the clutch laid by his partner... Very soon, a cygnet emerges, but as he in no way resembles any of them he is immediately stigmatized by the whole farmyard, enduring humiliations and suspicion on the part of his feathered companions. But in the end he becomes a magnificent white swan.
In The Ugly Duckling, Bardin opts for the musical genre; there are no dialogues, only verses written by the famous poet and song-writer Iulii Kim on music adapted from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, arranged by Sergei Anashkin and directed by Vladimir Spivakov with the National Philarmonic Orchestra of Russia. The entire film is built upon an exact combination of music and movements of the plasticine figures, reaching at times the perfection of a classical ballet, for example in the scene where the chicks hatch the eggs. The song shouted at the raising of the bird-community’s flag is increasingly comic every time it is repeated, while the ugly duckling’s dejected solo contrasts vividly with the birds’ enthusiastic collective songs that resemble typical Soviet tunes. The frequent reoccurrence of the duckling’s solo can become annoying but, on the other hand, this very reiteration strips the song of the inherent, sad feeling and stresses the uncanny comic effect of the situation, in a way similar to the one experienced in Charlie Chaplin’s films.

Maatilalle, kaakattavien kanojen ja ankkojen keskelle syntyy harvinaisen ruma linnunpoikanen. Pientä poloista kiusataan ja syrjitään poikkeavan ulkonäkönsä vuoksi.
Eräänä päivänä poikanen näkee parven syysmuuttoon valmistautuvia villijoutsenia. Poikanen ihastelee kauniita, sulavaliikkeisiä lintuja kaukaa. Outo levottomuus täyttää sen mielen, mutta nokittu ja potkittu polo ei tohdi lähestyä uljaita olentoja.
Pitkän ja kylmän talven päätteeksi ankanpoikanen saa siipiinsä uudet sulat ja yllättävän paljon voimaa. Arastellen poikanen lennähtää joutsenlammelle, ihailemiensa villijoutsenten joukkoon. Jännityksellä se odottaa vastaanottoaan kauniiden valkeiden lintujen joukossa. Kuinka poikasen käy? Hyväksyvätkö joutsenet rumiluksen joukkoonsa vai jatkuuko poloisen kiusaaminen?
Ruma ankanpoikanen perustuu H. C. Andersenin rakastettuun satuun. Klassisen vaha- animaation taustalla soi Tshaikovskin Joutsenlampi.
