The book demonstrates variety of the newspaper language and the mass media genres. The aim is to prepare the students for the reading of the original texts from periodicals. The manual contains three chapters which are structured as follows: lexical and grammatical themes, genres, grammar in tables with comments. The book is designed for foreign students who speak Russian at the basic level. It can be used both with and without a teacher. At the end of this course the students should read and understand the newspaper texts, answer the questions, compare information of the two texts read and speak about it, retell the texts read. The themes discussed in the book are: official visits, elections, government, terrorism, international relations, culture, business, etc.
